Boys and Girls Clubs of the Big Bend Awarded 21st Century Grant

Incorporating the New Century Integrated Instructional System

(January, 2003, Piscataway,  New Jersey) New Century Education Corporation is pleased to announce that its Integrated Instructional System software will be installed at four learning centers in Jefferson County, Florida under a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant from the Florida Department of Education.  The award is to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Big Bend and provides $800,000 a year for each of the next five years.  The 21st Century Community Learning Centers program utilizes federal education funds to support after school programs across the country, focusing upon underachieving students and low performing schools. According to Samuel “Buddy” Streit, President of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Big Bend, the winning proposal was developed in collaboration with the Jefferson County Schools and many local partners “…and will allow us to develop and strengthen academic and enrichment programs for hundreds of deserving kids in Jefferson County.”

The New Century Integrated Instructional System provides a complete and comprehensive curriculum for individualized instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics for elementary, middle and high schools and adult education programs.
The software system provides appropriately challenging multimedia instruction to help students meet local and state academic standards in reading and math, based on an automated and accurate assessment of ability levels.  New Century’s GED Preparation Program will be implemented at the centers to provide a meaningful parent education component.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America serve 3.3 million boys and girls at 3,103 club locations across the country. The mission of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Big Bend is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. By reaching children at an early age and providing positive activities and encouragement, the Club provides a compelling alternative to youth crime, gang membership, drugs, and other negative influences that effect youth today.
